A driver topped 100 mph on Highway 26 near Hillsboro early Wednesday, Aug. 26, fleeing a Washington County sheriff's deputy. The pursuit ended with the suspect found hiding 20 feet up a tree.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office said the deputy tried to stop a black sedan near Northwest Jackson School Road around 2:40 a.m. The driver sped east, and within minutes a second deputy spotted a matching vehicle heading south on Southwest 185th Avenue, according to a WCSO press release. That driver also refused to stop.
Deputies tracked the car to Southwest 188th Court, where it pulled into an apartment complex. The vehicle was a stolen black 2015 BMW 335. It was empty. Three people were running from it.
Deputies set a perimeter and called in a K9 team. Corporal Terry and K9 Griff began tracking and quickly found two passengers on a nearby porch. The dog then followed a trail into a marshy wooded area, where the third suspect had climbed roughly 20 feet into a tree.
A drone pinpointed the suspect's exact position. After about 45 minutes, the man agreed to come down and was taken into custody.
The sheriff's office said the driver, a 21-year-old Portland man, was arrested on allegations of attempting to elude, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, reckless endangering and possession of a stolen vehicle. The two passengers, both 19-year-old Hillsboro residents, were issued citations for their involvement and released. The sheriff's office did not specify what the citations were for.
The sheriff's office also used its Drone as a First Responder (DFR) program during a July 2 pursuit in Aloha, where a drone provided real-time updates on a fleeing suspect's movements through a neighborhood.
No information on formal charges or a court date for the driver was available as of Tuesday, Sept. 1. Residents with tips can contact the Washington County Sheriff's Office non-emergency line at 503-629-0111.
