The Hillsboro Hops Fund has crossed $1 million in cumulative donations since 2014, the club announced Monday, Sept. 28.
The milestone caps more than a decade of grants and scholarships directed at youth sports and education across the Portland metro area. The fund, established after the Hops' inaugural 2013 season in Hillsboro, has awarded more than 400 grants and scholarships, according to the team's announcement. Those dollars have reached programs serving more than 100,000 youth athletes.
Fifty-five students have received scholarships through the fund.
Fifty-one of them were first-generation college students.
"When we established the Hillsboro Hops Fund in 2014 … we were both enthusiastic and uncertain that we could make a significant difference for our new hometown," Hops owner Mike McMurray said. "Thirteen years and $1 million later, we are very proud that the community has joined us to create scholarships and enhance sports opportunities for local youth at a level beyond our wildest dreams."
Most of the fund's support has gone to organizations and individuals in Hillsboro and the surrounding metro area. Grants have also reached Astoria, Southwest Washington, Canby and Milwaukie.
Field refurbishment has been a primary focus. The fund has concentrated on providing synthetic turf fields that local youth baseball and softball teams can use year-round.
The Hops are now looking to build on the milestone with a fundraiser at Hops Ballpark. "Take Me Out to the Ballpark: A Social Evening with Purpose" is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. The after-hours event will feature interactive games, raffles, entertainment and behind-the-scenes ballpark access.
Tickets include event entry, drinks and heavy appetizers. Attendees must be 21 or older. Tickets are available through the Hops' event page.
Hannah August, the Hops' senior director of merchandise and community engagement, said in the team's Sept. 1 event announcement that the evening aims to bring the community together while supporting youth sports and education.
The Nov. 7 fundraiser is the next scheduled Hops Fund event.
