Washington County deputies arrested a Gresham man on a kidnapping charge after he allegedly stole a car with a woman trapped inside. The arrest followed a high-speed chase that started on Highway 26.

Tyrone Thompson, 27, was booked into the Washington County Jail on seven charges, including second-degree kidnapping, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, attempting to elude, reckless driving, reckless endangering and criminal mischief, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident started around 2:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, when a deputy conducting Labor Day weekend impaired-driving patrols spotted two vehicles speeding west on Highway 26 near Southwest Murray Boulevard, KGW reported.

The driver of a white Audi flagged the deputy down and pointed toward the other car, a black Mercedes. The Audi driver told the deputy the Mercedes had just been stolen outside a Portland bar and that a friend was still inside.

Chase topped 100 mph

Deputies located the Mercedes heading east on Highway 26 toward Portland, traveling above 100 mph, according to the sheriff's office. The pursuit continued through Portland and onto Highway 30 toward Scappoose.

The Mercedes ran out of gas.

Deputies took Thompson into custody and found the female passenger unharmed. She told officers she had tried to call for help, but Thompson grabbed her phone, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office did not confirm whether Portland Police or deputies from other counties assisted in the chase, KPTV reported.

Outstanding warrant at time of arrest

KGW reported that Thompson had an outstanding arrest warrant at the time of the Sept. 4 incident. He had been granted supervised release on Aug. 10 in a separate case but failed to appear for a court hearing on Sept. 4, prompting a judge to issue the warrant.

The Oregonian also reported on the arrest, corroborating the account of the chase and the charges.

During the broader Labor Day traffic safety operation, Washington County deputies made 448 traffic stops and identified eight impaired drivers, the sheriff's office said.
