A man whose violent criminal history includes a 2023 armed threat in Hillsboro was sentenced to 15 years in prison for domestic violence offenses that included threatening his girlfriend with a machete.

Washington County Circuit Court Judge Erik Buchér handed down the sentence to Armando Duran-Maya on Monday, July 21, the Washington County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday, July 23.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Buchér called it "one of the most egregious cases of domestic violence" he had ever seen.

A jury convicted Duran-Maya on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, menacing constituting domestic violence, fourth-degree assault constituting domestic violence, two counts of tampering with a witness, and extortion.

The case was prosecuted by the District Attorney's Office's specialized Domestic Violence team.

What happened

According to the DA's office, Duran-Maya assaulted his girlfriend on multiple occasions over several days in December 2024. During one assault, he threatened her with a machete, and the victim feared for her life.

The victim reported the attacks to police but tried to retract her report two days later.

Investigators discovered Duran-Maya had been contacting family members and friends from the Washington County Jail, pressuring them to convince the victim to say she had filed a false report.

The day he was released from custody, Duran-Maya found the victim and allegedly attacked her again. Rape charges stemming from that incident are pending in Multnomah County.

Hillsboro connection and criminal history

Duran-Maya's sentence was enhanced because of a lengthy criminal record stretching back decades.

In 2023, a community member reported Duran-Maya carrying a loaded firearm and threatening family members in Hillsboro, according to the DA's office. He had never reported to Parole and Probation as required and had failed to register as a sex offender.

His record goes further back. In the 1990s, he raped a woman in her Portland apartment. That case went unsolved until 2003, when his DNA was entered into law enforcement databases after a conviction for attempted first-degree arson of a Portland apartment building.

While awaiting trial on the rape charge, he fled Oregon and was located in Washington state in 2006 after a law enforcement pursuit. He was convicted of first-degree rape in 2007.

After serving a lengthy prison sentence, Duran-Maya was released in 2016 and deported to Mexico. He later returned to the United States.

What's next

Duran-Maya will be transferred to the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his 15-year sentence. The Multnomah County rape charges remain pending with no confirmed hearing date.

The DA's office acknowledged the work of the Hillsboro Police Department, Portland Police detectives, Washington County Parole and Probation, and DA's office Domestic Violence investigators in the case.
