The Hillsboro Hops won four of six games against the Spokane Indians last week, pounding out 54 runs and 74 hits while batting .325 as a team. It was likely the highest-scoring series in franchise history.
None of it was enough.
Hillsboro still trails the Vancouver Canadians by six games for the Northwest League's final second-half playoff spot with just 12 games left in the regular season. The Hops open a six-game home stand against the Tri-City Dust Devils on Tuesday, Aug. 25, with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. at Ron Tonkin Field.
The series at Avista Stadium in Spokane featured scores of 12-10, 15-13 and 14-6. The Hops' Saturday-Sunday run and hit totals set a franchise two-day record, according to the Beaverton Valley Times.
Carlos Virahonda led the lineup, going 8-for-18 with a home run and six RBI across the six games. He was one of eight Hops to bat .286 or better for the week. In Monday's 14-6 series finale, Virahonda crushed a grand slam in the seventh inning to put the game away.
Kenny Castillo turned in one of the best single-game performances in team history in that finale: 3-for-4 with two home runs, an RBI triple, five RBI and four runs scored. He hit .353 with seven RBI for the week.
JD Dix batted .421 with a homer and five RBI in five games. Catcher Ivan Luciano went 6-for-13 with eight RBI in three games. Kayson Cunningham added a home run, five RBI and three stolen bases.
First baseman Chris Katz, the Diamondbacks' ninth-round pick out of Mercer University in the 2026 MLB Draft, made his professional debut Saturday, Aug. 22, and went 5-for-6 with a home run. He finished his first two games 6-for-10 with two RBI. Newest Hop Augie Mojica, signed from the Boise Hawks in the Pioneer League, also debuted in the series finale, limiting Spokane to one run over two innings.
Reliever John West was the pitching standout, allowing two hits in five shutout innings. Starter Caden Grice earned a win with 5.2 innings of one-run ball and six strikeouts. As a team, the Hops posted a league-best 5.02 ERA for the week.
The week began badly. In the series opener on Wednesday, Aug. 19, Hillsboro blew a 10-2 lead and lost 12-10 in a bullpen collapse, falling eight games back. The Hops then won four of the final five to claw back two games in the standings.
The MiLB.com recap noted the Hops need only tie Vancouver or the Everett AquaSox in the second-half standings to reach the postseason, provided the tie is for first or second place behind Eugene. Hillsboro held the season-series tiebreaker over Vancouver as of Aug. 20.
After the Tri-City series, the Hops close the regular season with a split home-and-home set against the Eugene Emeralds. Hillsboro is 6-18 against Eugene this year.
