The Hillsboro Rotary Club is putting $10,000 toward free diapers for Washington County families.

The club donated the money to PDX Diaper Bank, a nonprofit that supplies diapers to families through community agency partnerships. The gift will support PDX Diaper Bank's work at Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) Free Food Markets in Hillsboro and Tigard, according to the Rotary club.

The Hillsboro market, at 5300 N.E. Elam Young Parkway, serves about 180 people the second Tuesday of each month, reaching an estimated 500 community members. The Tigard market, at 10777 S.W. Cascade Ave., draws about 130 people on the fourth Monday of each month, benefiting roughly 400 community members, according to the Beaverton Valley Times.

PDX Diaper Bank already distributes free diapers at the Tigard market. The Rotary club said the donation will help the nonprofit expand access at both sites.

The average cost to diaper a child runs about $1,200 a year, according to PDX Diaper Bank. Federal programs like WIC and SNAP do not cover diapers. The organization has distributed nearly 9.9 million diapers since its founding in 2012, as of September, according to its website. In 2025, PDX Diaper Bank supported about 3,912 children each month through 47 partner agencies.

Dawn Dzubay, a self-sufficiency programs analyst at the ODHS Tigard office, described the markets as more than a grocery pickup. "We've built a real sense of community around the market," Dzubay told the Beaverton Valley Times in July. "People recognize each other, and they recognize the volunteers."

Both ODHS markets celebrated four-year anniversaries this summer. The Hillsboro market marked the milestone in June, and the Tigard market followed in July. No ID is required. The markets are open to everyone.

Residents who want to support PDX Diaper Bank can make financial contributions or donate supplies at pdxdiaperbank.org.

The next Hillsboro ODHS Free Food Market is Tuesday, Sept. 8. The Tigard market's next date is Monday, Sept. 28.
