The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council will vote on Wednesday on designs for two new public murals.

The council meets at 4 p.m. at the Walters Cultural Arts Center to consider mural proposals for the Civic Center and the Dairy Creek Futsal Court. Public Art Supervisor Karl LeClair is presenting both items, according to the council's posted agenda.

The Civic Center mural has been in the works since spring. At its May 27 meeting, the council's mural committee selected artists Allison McClay and Rodolfo Serna from a pool of 16 applicants, with community engagement and storytelling driving the choice. Community input sessions followed in June. Wednesday's vote is the final design approval.

The Dairy Creek Futsal Court mural has followed a parallel track. The committee reviewed proposals from artists on the city's mural roster beginning in April, evaluating experience, creativity, and community fit.

The futsal courts themselves are under construction by Faison Construction Inc., which won the contract in May.

The meeting also features a guest presentation from Jenna Adams of the Children's Healing Art Project, a Hillsboro-based nonprofit at 136 S.E. 3rd Ave. that sends teaching artists into hospitals and clinics to work with kids facing medical challenges. HACC staff member Bridie Harrington is introducing Adams.

Residents can attend in person or join by Zoom (Meeting ID: 845 9609 0445, Passcode: 785338). Anyone who wants to speak virtually must register by 3 p.m. Wednesday by emailing [email protected] or calling 503-615-3497.

For context, the council approved a $27,250 mural by Portland-based artist Emily Kepulis at 158 N.E. 2nd Ave. in an 11-0 vote at its June 24 meeting. That project, funded from the Public Art Fund, depicts agricultural fields, the coast range, and a setting sun.
