Downtown Hillsboro's free monthly arts night hits a milestone on Tuesday, Sept. 1, when the Art Walk celebrates 20 years with expanded programming, limited-edition stickers and a same-night Tuesday Night Market.

The event runs 5 to 8 p.m. in the Cultural Arts District, the same stretch of downtown where a handful of organizations and businesses launched the tradition in September 2006. Two decades later, the lineup for the anniversary includes puppet-making, watercolor demos, an interactive photography talk and crafts for all ages.

"Art Walk began as a grassroots-organized event, and it still is," Cultural Arts District manager Bridie Harrington said in a city announcement. "… It's a community-driven event founded on partnerships. That history makes it special."

To mark the occasion, Catherine Bede Gallery on 3rd Avenue and the Cultural Arts District recruited 20 local artists to design 20 commemorative stickers. Each will be available at a different downtown business while supplies last. The idea came from Kara Kazemba of Ancora Wellness, a longtime Art Walk participant. Profiles of the sticker artists and their host venues have been rolling out on the Hillsboro Art Walk Facebook page since mid-August, and a full event listing from Tualatin Valley Creates has additional details.

Here's what's planned for the anniversary evening:

  • Garbage Goblin puppet-making using bottle caps, cereal boxes and scrap materials. Hosted by Bag&Baggage Productions at the Vault Theatre.
  • Watercolor demonstration by local artist Lieta Gratteri, painting sunflowers. Hosted at the Gallery at Dee's Divine Finds.
  • Tote-bag coloring for all ages at Sweet T Bakery, described as Art Walk's newest location.
  • Interactive artist talk at 6 p.m. with photographer Angela Holm at the Walters Cultural Arts Center Gallery, 527 E. Main St. Holm will display photographs alongside the cameras that made them while viewers guess how each image was created.
  • "Find your sparkle" craft for all ages, hosted by the Children's Healing Art Project (CHAP).

The Tuesday Night Market, which normally wraps up before September, has been extended through Sept. 1 after earlier cancellations due to heat and smoke. That means shoppers can browse market vendors and Art Walk galleries on the same evening.

Influence Music Hall continues to curate live music for each monthly walk, and the city supports the event through marketing, programming resources and its Artist Stipend Program.
