Hillsboro Art Walk marked its 20th anniversary on Tuesday, Sept. 1, with free activities, a collectible sticker hunt and a bonus night market running from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown's Cultural Arts District.
The monthly event was founded in September 2006 by Linda Holland and others, with early participants including Tualatin Valley Artists and the Walters Cultural Arts Center, the Hillsboro Herald reported. Twenty years later, the anniversary lineup filled several blocks of what the Herald calls Hillsboro's "Living Room."
For the milestone, Catherine Bede Gallery and the City of Hillsboro's Cultural Arts District organized "20 Years • 20 Artists • 20 Stickers." Twenty local artists created original artwork printed as free 3×3-inch vinyl stickers, available at 20 participating locations while supplies lasted. The idea came from Kara Kazemba of Ancora Wellness, a local business leader and Art Walk participant.
Special programming stretched across several venues. Bag&Baggage Productions hosted "Garbage Goblin" puppet-making with upcycled bottle caps, scrap materials and cereal boxes at the Vault Theatre.
Local artist Lieta Gratteri demonstrated watercolor sunflower painting at the Gallery at Dee's Divine Finds. Sweet T Bakery offered tote-bag coloring. Photographer Angela Holm led an interactive talk at 6 p.m. at the Walters Cultural Arts Center Gallery. The Children's Healing Art Project, known as CHAP, ran a "find your sparkle" craft station.
The Tuesday Night Market, extended through Sept. 1 after earlier cancellations due to heat and smoke, ran alongside the celebration.
Catherine Bede, owner of Catherine Bede Gallery on 3rd Avenue, said in the city's Aug. 19 announcement: "We love to open our doors during Hillsboro Art Walk because it represents the values we stand for: connection, collaboration, kindness, and supporting one another."
Bridie Harrington, Hillsboro's Cultural Arts District manager, described the event's staying power in the same announcement. She said Art Walk remains grassroots at its core and called it "a community-driven event founded on partnerships."
Influence Music Hall, a longtime nonprofit partner, continues to curate monthly live music lineups for the walk. The City of Hillsboro supports the event through marketing, programming resources and its Artist Stipend Program.
The Art Walk takes place on the first Tuesday of each month. Details and participating venues are listed at hillsboroartwalk.com.
