Glencoe High School senior Shaayan Sinha is one of 191 Oregon students named a semifinalist in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the semifinalists Wednesday, Sept. 9. Sinha was the only Hillsboro School District student on the statewide list, according to OregonLive, which published the full roster of Oregon honorees.

Nationwide, more than 16,000 high school seniors earned the designation from a pool of more than 1.2 million students who took the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Semifinalists represent less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors.

The NMSC expects more than 15,000 semifinalists to advance to finalist standing, with notifications in February 2027. About 6,700 students nationwide will receive National Merit Scholarships worth a combined $24 million, with winners announced in a series of releases beginning in April 2027. For comparison, 26 Oregon students received $2,500 National Merit Scholarships in spring 2026.
