Nancy Hudson Cross, who spent three decades as a high school administrator at schools including Glencoe High and Hillsboro High, died Thursday, Sept. 3, at age 85.

Cross served as assistant principal at four Oregon high schools: Banks High, Tigard High, Glencoe High and Hillsboro High. Her career in education spanned 30 years, according to an obituary published in the Hillsboro News Times.

Colleagues and families at Glencoe and Hillsboro High knew her as an administrator who showed up. Cross spent three to four nights a week at after-school activities, including sports, plays, music events and parent-teacher nights. She often arrived before 7 a.m. and stayed until around 10 p.m. for evening events.

Her husband, Tim Schauermann, made those long days a shared routine. For 30 years, he drove to her school after work, took her to dinner and stayed for the night's activity. The family called them "date nights."

Cross was born May 10, 1941, in San Francisco. Her father, an Army Air Force pilot, was killed in his plane in April 1942. She and her mother returned to Fort Scott, Kansas, where she grew up.

She graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor's degree in English and later earned a master's degree in counseling and psychology from the University of Utah. She taught 11th-grade English at Thurston High School in Oregon and Marietta High School in Ohio before becoming a counselor at Willamette High School in Eugene. She completed her administrative degree at the University of Oregon.

Cross married her first husband, Gary Paul Cross, in 1963. They had two daughters, Nicole and Heather. She married Schauermann in 1983, adding stepchildren Traci and Scott Schauermann to the family. They were married 43 years.

In retirement, Cross and Schauermann played golf six days a week for much of 20 years. She was a shareholder in a golf course. She traveled to 102 countries, including a trip behind the Iron Curtain weeks after it fell. She also played Bridge in weekly groups in Las Vegas, Mesa, Arizona, and Forest Grove.

She is survived by Schauermann; daughters Nicole Cardosa of San Diego and Heather Flynn of Del Mar, California; stepchildren Traci Schauermann of Crested Butte, Colorado, and Scott Schauermann of Portland; and five grandchildren.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Sept. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Forest Hills Golf Course.

Everyone who knew Cross is welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Rotary Polio Plus vaccination program, the Pacific University emergency student fund or West Tuality Habitat for Humanity.
