The Hillsboro Rotary Club has donated $10,000 to PDX Diaper Bank to help supply diapers to Washington County families who can't afford them.

The money will support PDX Diaper Bank's work at the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) Free Food Markets in Hillsboro and Tigard, the club announced on its website. The two monthly markets together distribute more than 48,000 diapers a year, according to a May 2026 report by DELC News.

Diapering a child costs about $1,200 a year, according to PDX Diaper Bank, citing a 2023 national survey. No federal program covers the expense. Diapers are excluded from both WIC and SNAP benefits, leaving families to cover the full cost on their own.

The need is acute. In May 2026, DELC News reported that the Hillsboro market was down to only size 1 diapers, while the Tigard location had sizes 1, 4, 5 and 6. One in two Oregon families struggled to afford adequate diaper supplies that year, the outlet reported.

Dawn Dzubay, a community partnership coordinator at the ODHS Tigard office, was quoted in that same report.

"Families experiencing diaper need are often facing food insecurity as well, which makes the markets an ideal distribution point," Dzubay said in May 2026. "Having to choose between rent, food and diapers places a huge strain on families."

As of July 2026, the Hillsboro market operated on the second Tuesday of each month at 5300 NE Elam Young Parkway and served about 180 people per session, reaching an estimated 500 community members, according to ODHS. The Tigard market ran every fourth Monday at 10777 SW Cascade Ave. and served about 130 people, benefiting roughly 400.

PDX Diaper Bank Executive Director Rachel Alston has been working with ODHS to secure long-term funding for the diaper program, DELC News reported. The Hillsboro Rotary Club is among several organizations that have backed the effort. Trillium Community Health, the City of Tigard and Nikon have also contributed.

PDX Diaper Bank works with about 50 partner agencies across the Portland metro area, providing diapers and continence care products to families with young children, older adults and people with disabilities. Residents who want to help can donate money or supplies at pdxdiaperbank.org.
