Hillsboro School District is directing students and staff to practice earthquake safety at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, as part of the Great Oregon ShakeOut.

The district announced the drill in a bilingual post on its website on Friday, Oct. 9. The ShakeOut is billed as the world's largest earthquake drill, with millions of participants at schools, workplaces and homes worldwide.

The drill centers on one move: Drop, Cover and Hold On. Participants drop to their hands and knees, take cover under a sturdy desk or table and hold on until shaking stops.

The district's post did not specify which schools are participating or describe what the drill will look like in individual classrooms.

Oregon sits along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which last produced a major earthquake in 1700. Seismologists project a magnitude 7.4 or greater quake in the Pacific Northwest within the next 50 years, the Hillsboro News-Times reported in July.

The ShakeOut website at shakeout.org/oregon offers household preparedness checklists and tips for practicing the drill at home.
