The Hillsboro School District wants students to leave the car at home Wednesday, Oct. 7, for National Walk & Roll to School Day.
The district posted a notice on its website Friday, Oct. 2, advising families to plan routes in advance and find others to walk or ride with. The announcement was published in both English and Spanish. The national event, organized by the National Center for Safe Routes to School, has run annually since 1997.
Students in grades K–6 who live within one mile of their school are in the district's walk zone. For grades 7–12, the boundary is 1.5 miles.
The City of Hillsboro's Safe Routes to School program partners with the district to promote walking, biking and scooting to school. The city operates two Traffic Playgrounds where kids can practice safe biking and walking skills: Bicentennial Park at 275 N.E. 25th Ave. and W. Vern McKinney Elementary School at 535 N.W. Darnielle St.
Families can find route-planning resources at walkbiketoschool.org or the district's Safe Routes to School page.
