The former Rite Aid at 2021 N.W. 185th Ave. in Hillsboro's Tanasbourne Town Center is back in business as Burlington, the off-price clothing and home goods retailer that held its grand opening celebration on July 3.
The store is one of roughly a dozen former Oregon Rite Aid locations that have landed new tenants since the pharmacy chain shuttered all of its stores nationwide in 2025, according to The Oregonian/OregonLive. Nineteen former Rite Aid storefronts across the state remain vacant with no known incoming tenant.
Burlington marked its arrival with a $5,000 donation to West Union Elementary School through its partner organization Adopt-A-School, according to the Hillsboro School District. The funds will go to West Union teachers for classroom supplies. First grade teacher Haley Mostul and school board member Katie Rhyne accepted the gift at the July 3 event.
The Hillsboro location is reportedly Burlington's eighth store in Oregon, according to The Oregonian/OregonLive, and part of an aggressive national expansion. The New Jersey-based company planned to open 110 net-new stores during its fiscal year ending in January 2027, according to Retail Touch Points.
"We are feeling bullish about our prospects in fiscal 2026," CEO Michael O'Sullivan said in the company's March financial results release. Burlington operated more than 1,200 stores at the end of its fiscal year 2025 and was forecasting total sales increases of 8% to 10% for the current year.
Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and spent most of 2025 closing every one of its more than 1,200 locations. More than 40 of those closures were in Oregon. Thirteen Oregon stores were sold to CVS Pharmacy and reopened under that banner in August and September 2025.
Other former Rite Aid sites that have found new tenants include Planet Fitness in Eugene, Ross Dress for Less in Hood River and Lincoln City, Natural Grocers in McMinnville and Grocery Outlet in Silverton. Most of the rest sit empty.
Nineteen Oregon storefronts still have no announced replacement tenant.
