Jim's Ice Cream, the downtown Hillsboro scoop shop that survived a car crashing through its storefront and a year-long closure, will shut down permanently on Sunday, Aug. 23, after the building's owner decided to sell the property.
Owner Adrian Wakefield announced the closure Wednesday, July 29, saying "this decision is completely out of my hands." The business has no plans to relocate.
Wakefield said the property's appraised value has been inflated by the very success of her business, creating a bind: she cannot finance a purchase of the building at 10th and Maple streets even though she wants to stay.
The shop reopened in December 2025 after being shuttered for more than a year following a vehicle crash into the storefront on Thanksgiving Day 2024. KGW reported that customers lined up around the building on reopening day. Wakefield said the 8.5 months since then were "the best we've ever had," crediting community support for the turnaround.
The crash had cut off Wakefield's family income and strained her employees financially. Insurance delays prolonged the closure well beyond initial estimates.
Wakefield, a lifelong Hillsboro native, started working at the parlor at age 16. Her sister managed the shop before her.
The business began as a Baskin-Robbins franchise; former owner Jim Schultz rebranded it as Jim's Ice Cream after stepping away from the national chain over quality and franchising concerns. Wakefield later bought the business from Schultz.
The closure comes as the Hillsboro City Council on July 23 approved a three-year investment of up to $360,000 for the Hillsboro Downtown Partnership, aimed at supporting downtown businesses and economic vitality.
Jim's Ice Cream is open for final scoops 4–10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon–10 p.m. Friday through Sunday through Aug. 23.
