The Hillsboro Hops need road wins, and they need them now.

Hillsboro opens a three-game set at Eugene's P.K. Park on Friday, Aug. 14, holding a 2-1 series lead over the first-place Emeralds but sitting approximately four games back in the Northwest League second-half standings with roughly 20 games left in the regular season. First pitch is 6:35 p.m.

The Hops won the first two games of this six-game series at home behind timely hitting and dominant bullpen work. Then Eugene blew out Hillsboro 9-1 in Thursday's Game 3, snapping the Hops' momentum before the series shifted south.

Second baseman JD Dix and catcher Kenny Castillo have been the Hops' biggest bats in this series. In the Game 2 win on Aug. 12, Hillsboro trailed 3-0 before Dix launched a solo homer to right field, his ninth of the year, and Castillo followed with a two-run shot to right-center, his fifth, tying the game in the fifth inning. Third baseman Yassel Soler singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth.

On the mound, reliever Rocco Reid earned the Game 2 win with 2⅔ shutout innings, and closer Luke Craig struck out all four batters he faced for his first save of the season. The Hops' pitching staff leads the Northwest League in strikeouts, combining for 14 punchouts in Game 2 alone.

Starter Jacob Steinmetz, who returned from injury earlier this month, gave Hillsboro a spark in Game 1 on Aug. 11, throwing four shutout innings with six strikeouts and two hits allowed. Whether Steinmetz gets another turn in Eugene remains to be seen.

The math is straightforward. Before Thursday's Game 3, MiLB standings showed Eugene and Vancouver tied at 23-20 and Hillsboro at 20-24. The 9-1 loss pushed the Hops' deficit to approximately four games with about 20 remaining. Hillsboro had gone 7-3 over its previous 10 games before the blowout, proof the club can play at a contender's pace. But the Hops' last road trip to Eugene in July produced a 1-2 record, with the team dropping the first two before salvaging the finale.

As we reported Wednesday, the playoff math was already tight heading into this series. Winning two of three this weekend would pull Hillsboro within striking distance. A sweep would change the conversation entirely.

Game 5 is Saturday, Aug. 15, at 5:05 p.m., and Game 6 is Sunday, Aug. 16, at 4:05 p.m. All three games air on Rip City Radio 620. After the Eugene series, the Hops head to Spokane beginning Tuesday, Aug. 18.
