A $150 million training campus built for the Portland Thorns and Portland Fire opened Friday, Aug. 21, on a former Nike office complex in Hillsboro, giving two professional women's sports franchises their first purpose-built shared home in the country.

The Kaiser Permanente Performance Center held its ribbon-cutting Saturday, Aug. 22, capping a week in which players from both teams got their first look at the 100,000-square-foot facility. Portland Fire president Clare Hamill said she was on-site the morning of Aug. 18 when athletes first walked into the locker room.

"I texted Sophia, and I was like, 'Hey, what kind of chair do you have for nursing?' And she told me, and I was like, 'Okay, we're just gonna get that one,'" co-owner Lisa Bhathal Merage told KGW, describing how she consulted Thorns and U.S. women's national team player Sophia Wilson on furnishing the facility's mothers' rooms.

RAJ Sports, the ownership group led by Bhathal Merage and her brother Alex Bhathal, converted the 12-acre suburban office campus into a facility designed by Portland-based Populous Architecture. The Phase 1 construction cost was estimated at $75 million, with the broader campus buildout totaling $150 million per AP reporting.

The campus includes two full-sized outdoor soccer pitches, a 17,000-square-foot practice gym with two basketball courts, a 5,000-square-foot strength and performance center, hydrotherapy pools with an underwater treadmill, a yoga and Pilates studio, and a full-service dining room staffed by a chef and nutritionist. A meditation area features a ceiling painted to look like a forest.

The details go beyond athletics. The facility has two mothers' rooms created in partnership with baby gear brand Nuna, a nursery stocked with toys and stuffed animals, dedicated family spaces, and a private player entrance with secured parking for each team. Near the foyer sits an expansive lighted trophy case enclosed by glass, which Bhathal Merage described as "soon to be filled."

The Thorns previously trained at Providence Park in downtown Portland. The Fire, a WNBA expansion team, had been practicing at Portland State University.

RAJ Sports paid $63 million for the Thorns in January 2024 and a $125 million expansion fee later that year to bring the Fire into the WNBA as its 15th franchise. The ownership group has been consolidating operations in Hillsboro: in May, RAJ Sports signed a headquarters lease through February 2040 for 29,000 square feet next to the training facility, moving more than 200 front-office staff to the site, according to Hoodline.

The campus sits on land leased from Workspace Property Trust under a 15-year agreement running through 2040. Kaiser Permanente secured naming rights in February and became the official medical provider for both teams. Nike also announced a partnership with RAJ Sports during the opening week to provide product design, performance insights and youth programming at the Hillsboro campus.

RAJ Sports has described the performance center as Phase 1 of a larger planned buildout, though no timeline or details for Phase 2 have been announced.
