Hillsboro's Wingspan Event & Conference Center hosts the Westside Quilters Guild's biennial quilt show Oct. 30-31. The two-day event, first reported by The Oregonian's Janet Eastman, features vendors, workshops and presentations by two Portland designers.

The show's theme is "Oregon: Seashore, Forest and Mountain." The Oregonian reported about 200 quilts on display, including antiques. The guild's own website advertises more than 180. Either way, the exhibit includes a special challenge inspired by Oregon's state motto, "alis volat propiis" ("she flies with her own wings").

The show is part of Portland TextileX Month, a series of fiber-arts events running through Oct. 31.

Portland quilting author Christina Cameli headlines Friday, Oct. 30, with a presentation called "How Should I Quilt It?" from 11 a.m. to noon, included with show admission. Cameli, author of five quilting books, plans to transform an un-quilted top to show how design choices suit different skill levels. She also leads a "Next Level Quilting" workshop on free-motion quilting from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday for $65.

On Saturday, Oct. 31, quilt and fabric designer Chris Marchini of Rose City Originals takes the stage. Marchini will reveal his latest fabric collection with Dear Stella Fabrics, a Victorian-Gothic line called Damask Fatale Redeux, during a presentation titled "Haunting in Stitches" from 11 a.m. to noon, also included with admission.

"I will have a trunk show focusing on my Halloween quilts, which admittedly is the majority of my quilts," Marchini told The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Marchini leads a $65 afternoon workshop on making a "Skully Boi Pillow Cover," with the kit included, according to the guild's show page.

Vendors include Chase Lawrence of Chase Quilts and Julie Axberg of Snarky Quilts, whose accessories include fabric labels reading "handmade with love, chocolate and some cussing."

The guild, which has more than 200 members across the Portland metro area, produces the show with volunteers. Doors open at 10 a.m. both days. Friday hours run until 5 p.m. The guild's website lists Saturday closing at both 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., so visitors should check the site for final hours. The Wingspan center is at 801 NE 34th Ave. in Hillsboro. Advance tickets are available through the guild's website.
