Natural Grocers brand organic mung beans sold in Oregon are being recalled after customers found sharp glass fragments in the two-pound bags.

Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets Inc., the Colorado-based parent company of Natural Grocers, announced the recall Oct. 22 in a notice posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's website. The recall covers 22 states, including Oregon and Washington. Hillsboro-area shoppers who buy groceries at nearby Natural Grocers locations should check their pantries.

Natural Grocers operates 15 stores in Oregon. The chain does not have a Hillsboro location, but its Beaverton store at 3805 SW 117th Ave. is among the nearest options for local residents.

What's recalled

The recall applies only to Natural Grocers Brand Bulk Organic Mung Beans in two-pound clear plastic bags with UPC 000080112600. The affected pack dates are 26-160, 26-173, 26-196, 26-224 and 26-258, printed in the lower left corner of the label. Those lots began shipping June 10, according to the company's recall page.

Why it matters

No injuries have been reported.

Still, the company's recall notice warns that "ingesting glass fragments may cause injury to the consumer, and these injuries may include damage to teeth, laceration of the mouth and throat, or perforation of the intestine." That warning was current as of the Oct. 22 notice.

What to do

The company advises anyone who purchased the beans to stop using them right away. Customers can throw the product away or return it to any Natural Grocers store for a full refund or credit.
