Finding a parking spot may get harder in parts of Hillsboro — but city leaders hope it will make housing easier to build.

A 2023 Oregon law allows developers to build homes with fewer parking spaces near MAX stations and frequent bus routes, removing long-standing parking requirements in transit-rich areas.

The change comes as Hillsboro plans for more than 14,000 new homes over the next 20 years. City leaders have identified the TV Highway corridor as a key area for new apartments and mixed-use development.

Supporters say requiring fewer parking spaces lowers construction costs and frees up land for more housing, which could help address the region's housing shortage. Critics worry it could lead to more crowded neighborhood streets and parking shortages.

The city is now developing a long-term plan for the TV Highway corridor, with proposals due later this month. The plan will help shape how future housing and transit projects fit into one of Hillsboro's fastest-changing areas.
