A Portland woman is suing Kaiser Permanente for $13 million after she says a routine toenail procedure at its Hillsboro medical center turned into a medical nightmare.

Sarah Blackman’s lawsuit alleges a Kaiser podiatrist injected 70% rubbing alcohol instead of lidocaine before removing two ingrown toenails at Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center on Jan. 29.

According to the complaint, Blackman screamed and cried through the procedure because she had no pain relief. She alleges the doctor continued despite her distress and did not tell her the wrong substance had been used.

Days later, Blackman said her toes became swollen, discolored and painful. She was hospitalized for two days and treated for infection and tissue damage, according to the lawsuit.

The complaint says Kaiser notified Blackman more than a month later that alcohol had been injected instead of anesthetic. She alleges the health system never provided the written explanation she was promised.

Blackman and her husband are seeking $13 million in damages, citing medical malpractice, negligence and personal injury claims.

A Kaiser Permanente spokesperson declined to comment, citing the pending litigation. The podiatrist involved was not named in the complaint. No court date has been set.
