A fence along a busy Hillsboro road is getting a colorful makeover — and the artists behind it want drivers and neighbors to stop and take notice.
About 15 residents at MorningStar Senior Living transformed the facility’s fence along Northeast Amberglen Parkway into a mixed-media public art display they call “Senior Graffiti.”
Using paint, bottle caps, faux flowers, googly eyes and personal mementos, residents created pieces that reflect their memories, beliefs and personalities.
Kathy McCulloch, a four-year MorningStar resident who helped organize the project, said the display pushes back on stereotypes about aging.
“It’s not an age thing,” McCulloch told the Hillsboro News-Times. “This is very youthful. It’s really ageless.”
The artwork includes personal messages from residents, including Bonnie Berry’s piece centered on her life philosophy: seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.
Cara Johnson and her partner, Don Weller, created a collaborative piece featuring two otters, animals they said represent playfulness and staying young at heart. The couple met online after both were widowed and said their MorningStar community has become like family.
The project builds on MorningStar’s existing creative programs, including painting groups, singing, exercise classes and water aerobics. Unlike previous activities, “Senior Graffiti” was created to be shared beyond the walls of the facility.
Residents hope the display gives people passing by a reason to slow down — and rethink what creativity looks like at any age.
