The Portland metro area's first In-N-Out Burger opened June 18 in Hillsboro's Tanasbourne Town Center, bringing roughly 100 jobs.
The California-based chain opened 90 minutes ahead of schedule, starting service at 9 a.m. instead of the planned 10:30 a.m. About 100 customers were already waiting outside.
Emily Kukis, a 16-year Hillsboro resident originally from California, was first in the drive-thru line. She arrived at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, with her kids and a friend, and slept in her car overnight. In-N-Out workers brought her hot chocolate the next morning.
"We slept in our car. We have just been hanging out and chatting. This morning, some of the workers brought us hot chocolate … It's been a really cool experience," Kukis told the Hillsboro News Times.
Kukis is no stranger to grand openings. She was among the first 100 customers when Chick-fil-A opened its Tanasbourne location in 2016 and was an early arrival at the Qdoba in South Hillsboro's Reed's Crossing Town Center.
Regional manager Andy Rose said the Hillsboro restaurant is the chain's first in the Portland market. Until the June 18 opening, Portland-area fans had to drive to Keizer or Medford for their double-doubles. Rose said In-N-Out hired around 100 local employees and is looking to bring on more.
The restaurant seats 84 guests indoors and 62 on a covered outdoor patio. It has one drive-thru lane and is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., with extended hours until 1:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
City transportation engineers, Washington County, and the Oregon Department of Transportation reviewed and approved a traffic management plan for the site.
The plan prohibits drive-thru queuing onto Northeast Evergreen Parkway, Northwest 185th Avenue, or Northwest Cornell Road. Drivers access the restaurant through the signalized intersection at Northeast Town Center Drive and Northwest 185th Avenue.
When the drive-thru queue exceeds eight vehicles, associates use handheld devices to take orders outside. If the line grows past 29 vehicles, designated traffic control personnel are deployed. Managers monitor operations through live video feeds of the drive-thru and parking lot.
A specialized "All-Star Team" of experienced In-N-Out associates from other locations helped staff the opening to handle the surge.
Rose said Hillsboro won't be In-N-Out's only Portland-area location but declined to name future sites, citing real estate and construction variables.
