Hillsboro is adding a new place for athletes to play, with the city’s first dedicated outdoor futsal courts now under construction at Dairy Creek Park.

The two lighted, fenced courts are expected to open this fall, bringing a year-round public space for futsal, a fast-paced version of soccer played on a smaller court with a low-bounce ball.

The $1.3 million project is funded largely through state and federal grants, including $819,902 from the Land and Water Conservation Fund and Oregon’s Local Government Grant Program. The rest comes from parks system development fees.

The courts are being built with support from local soccer organizations Hillsboro Futsal and Hillsboro Rush, which already run indoor futsal programs during the winter.

The project will also bring public art to the park. Portland-Vancouver muralist Ana Gabriela-Honsowetz was selected to design artwork for the courts, with the city planning to reveal the design in July and complete the mural later this fall.

Located off SW 17th Avenue, Dairy Creek Park already features trails, a disc golf course, basketball courts and soccer fields. The futsal courts will become the park’s newest recreation option when they open later this year.
