A Hillsboro landmark is getting a second chance.
More than four years after a fire forced it out of downtown, Hillsboro Pharmacy & Fountain will reopen Tuesday at 243 E. Main St., bringing back a piece of the city’s history — with a few changes.
The pharmacy, which dates back to 1873, had operated at the Main Street location since the 1920s before a January 2022 fire in the neighboring Weil Arcade building damaged the storefront. Owner Jasmine Nguyen had purchased the business less than three months earlier.
Nguyen and her husband spent years rebuilding the space, including redesigning the old-fashioned fountain area after scrapping their first layout. A family health issue also delayed the reopening.
The returning business will look different from the pharmacy generations of Hillsboro residents knew. Prescriptions will be filled through Nguyen’s Portland pharmacy and delivered to secure pickup lockers at the Main Street location. Staff will still be available on-site, and vaccinations will be offered by appointment.
The fountain, however, is coming back. The menu will include ice cream, milkshakes, burgers and soups, along with Vietnamese dishes from Nguyen’s Gresham restaurant, including pho, banh mi and vermicelli noodles.
Some longtime favorites, including the famous pancakes, will return later as employees train and recipes are passed down.
The store will open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for 4 p.m. July 31.
