Hillsboro voters must register or update their voter information by Tuesday, Oct. 13, before ballots go out for the Tuesday, Nov. 3, general election.
The online registration deadline is 11:59 p.m. Oct. 13. Ballots will be mailed to all registered voters the next day, Wednesday, Oct. 14, according to Washington County Elections.
The election carries high local stakes. Nine candidates are competing for three Hillsboro City Council seats, in Wards 1, 2 and 3. All council candidates are elected at-large, so every Hillsboro voter will see all nine names on their ballot, the Hillsboro News Times reported.
Two Washington County commissioner races are also headed to runoffs after no candidate won a majority in the May 19 primary. Commissioners Nafisa Fai and Pam Treece are running for the at-large chair seat being left open by Chair Kathryn Harrington, who did not seek reelection. Fai received 39.1% of the primary vote and Treece received 33.1%, the News Times reported.
Former Hillsboro Mayor Steve Callaway and Hillsboro City Councilor Kipperlyn Sinclair are running for the District 4 seat left open by Commissioner Jerry Willey's retirement. Callaway led the six-candidate primary field with 32.9%, and Sinclair received 21.4%.
Residents who have moved, changed their name, recently become U.S. citizens or recently turned 16 should check or update their registration at oregonvotes.gov, Washington County Elections officials said.
The county also offers a free ballot-tracking service called BallotTrax. Voters can sign up at washcovotes.ballottrax.net/voter/ to receive text, email or voice alerts when their ballot is mailed, received and counted.
The county's Voter Assistance Team provides in-person Spanish interpretation at the Elections Office and telephone interpretation in other languages. The team can also help voters with disabilities mark their ballots.
Voters who have not received a ballot by about a week after Oct. 14 should contact Washington County Elections at 503-846-5800 or [email protected]. The Elections Office is at 155 N. First Ave. in Hillsboro. More information is available at WashCoVotes.org.
On Nov. 3, the Elections Office will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Official ballot drop boxes close at 8 p.m. No postage stamp is needed to return a ballot by mail.
